Is the myColorado mDL the same as the Colorado ID in Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or Samsung Wallet?
Yes, the myColorado mDL adheres to the same technical standards and information sources as the mDL or Colorado ID you may have seen or used with other digital wallets. The myColorado mDL does not share your personal information without your permission.
Is there any benefit to using mDL in the myColorado app?
We believe in meeting you where you are — and since over 40% the state’s adult population already uses myColorado, we’re bringing the latest in digital identification technology straight to your fingertips! The myColorado Wallet lets you conveniently store all your digital licenses, cards and documents in one secure place. Manage everything from vehicle registrations and titles to Colorado Parks and Wildlife licenses and the new mDL.
To ensure a true "no-wrong-door" approach to state services, Coloradans can also choose to add their mDL to DMV-approved wallets.
Is an mDL a replacement for a physical ID?
Not yet — but it’s a powerful complement to it. You should still carry your physical driver license or state-issued ID for interactions with law enforcement, government agencies, and businesses that haven’t yet adopted mDL readers.
State law requires an individual to carry their physical driver license when operating a motor vehicle - even when they have the mDL.
Can I present the myColorado mDL to law enforcement?
At this time, most Colorado law enforcement agencies do not accept the myColorado mDL, but you can present and share your Colorado Digital ID™, which is why it is important to understand when and where to use each. Colorado law enforcement agencies are actively working toward the ability to accept mDLs.
If I have a Colorado Digital ID in the app, do I still need a myColorado mDL? Should I use both in the app?
The Colorado Digital ID and the myColorado mDL are two distinct credentials designed for different situations:
Colorado Digital ID: Best for in-state use — proving your identity, age, or address to Colorado businesses, state agencies, and law enforcement agencies that accept it.
myColorado mDL: Built to the ISO/IEC 18013-5 international standard and future for digital identity, making it accepted at TSA airport checkpoints and by verifiers requiring that standard in Colorado and worldwide. This is the credential to use when traveling through Denver International Airport.
If you plan to use your smartphone at airport security, you’ll want to set up your myColorado mDL. Both credentials live in your myColorado app wallet.
Where is the myColorado mDL accepted?
TSA airport security screening at Denver International Airport is the primary location accepting the myColorado mDL. Simply present your mDL at participating TSA lanes just like a physical ID.
Acceptance is expanding - Colorado merchants interested in using mDL to verify Coloradans’ identities can use the free in-app mDL Reader.
Do I need to have a Real ID to have a myColorado mDL?
No, you are not required to have a Real ID to be issued a myColorado mDL.
Your mDL will have the same Real ID status as your physical credential, and situations that require a Real ID will not accept an mDL that is not based on a Real ID.
If your myColorado mDL is Real ID compliant, you will have an airplane icon next to the myColorado mDL in the Wallet. Additionally you can see the Real ID status of your myColorado mDL on the detail screen by tapping on your myColorado mDL, and then tapping the ⓘ next to your name.
Is there a fee to use the myColorado mDL?
There are no costs or fees associated with adding a myColorado mDL or using it as a form of identification where it is accepted.
