The Mobile Driver License (mDL) Reader allows you to verify a person’s age is over 18 or over 21 via their mDL in myColorado, and other digital wallets such as Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet. To use the mDL Reader:
Open the myColorado® app.
Sign in or tap ‘Skip for now’.
Select the Account tab.
Toggle on ‘mDL Reader’. Please read the instructions.
You can view the instructions again by tapping the information icon on the mDL Reader button on the Wallet screen, or by toggling the mDL Reader off and on again on the Account tab.

mDL Reader FAQs
Is this connected to the myColorado Digital ID?
The myColorado Digital ID and Mobile Driver’s License (mDL) are separate forms of ID.
The myColorado mDL is compatible with the mDL Reader, allowing anyone with the myColorado app to read an mDL from myColorado, or other digital wallets.
The Colorado Digital ID cannot be read with the mDL Reader, but has other security features that can be used to verify it.
Can the mDL Reader scan the barcode on the myColorado Digital ID?
No.
Do I need to have an internet connection?
No, this works offline.
Is any data regarding a verification stored on the mDL Reader device?
No, the myColorado mDL Reader does not store any information about a verification. A user who presents their mDL will see that what information was shared, as well as when and where, if they have activity history enabled on their mDL.
I cannot see the reader?
The mDL Reader is enabled from the Account tab in the app. If you are using an iOS device then you will need to be running iOS 17 or above to see the reader.
Does it work on iPads?
No, iPads are not NFC enabled.
Nothing happens when I try to read?
If you have an Android device using the mDL Reader, please check that you have NFC enabled. The instructions for this vary by device so please do an internet search to determine how to do this. Please also check the app permissions to ensure “Nearby devices” is enabled.
What if customers do not have an ID in their Apple Wallet, Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet?
They can follow the instructions within their respective wallet to get their ID issued.
Does the customer need to pull up their ID to present it?
To ensure a smooth transaction this is recommended. However, some wallets may automatically pull up the ID when placed near the mDL Reader.
Can I verify an mDL by just looking at it?
No, you must use a reader device or app.
Can I verify more than just age?
Not at this time. We may extend to include other use cases in the future.
Can the mDL Reader read mDLs issued by other states?
Yes it can. Not all states issue mDLs but we endeavor to include those that do, as they launch their mDL programs.
On iOS, the mDL Reader verifies mDLs with certificates supported by iOS directly, and is able to scan any mDL supported by iOS. The current list of supported authorities can be found on the Apple website.
On Android, the mDL Reader verifies mDLs with certificates provided to the AAMVA Digital Trust Service (DTS), and is able to scan any mDL using a certificate provided by the issuing state to the DTS. The current list of supported authorities can be found on the AAMVA website.
